

It is an excellent specimen tree that features a nodding central leader with widely-spaced ascending to arching to horizontal branches from which droop branchlets clad with flattened sprays of scale-like blue-green to gray-green leaves. ‘Pendula’ is a slender, pyramidal, strongly weeping form that may grow to as much as 35’ tall and 12’ wide over 35 years, but is often seen growing much smaller. Specific epithet means of Nootka Sound, British Columbia. Raised in Holland after 1884, it has been in commerce in North American since about 1907. Drooping branchlets hang from spreading, upcurving branches, foliage is gray-green. Some strong evidence suggests, however, that it maybe should be placed in the monotypic genus Callitropsis. Native to (or naturalized in) Oregon: Pyramidal tree, 30-45 ft high (9-14 m), or more, 10-15 ft (3-4.5 m) wide. This plant was originally described in the genus Cupressus, which many botanist consider to be correct, but has also been placed in Chamaecyparis and Xanthocyparis (as done here). Although it may grow from 60-90’ tall in the wild, it usually grows much shorter in home landscapes. Drooping sprays of small, scale-like, bluish-green leaves. By any name, it makes a strong focal point in the landscape. Taxonomists have argued over which genus this plant should correctly be placed in. Cupressus nootkatensis 'Sparkling Arrow' is a strikingly beautiful, narrow upright, strict-weeping selection of Nootka cypress with pendulous branches and foliage that is splashed with creamy white variegation.
